Ireland Youth Exchange Reflection

As part of an EU ERASMUS funded youth exchange programme, this summer, Brixton Wings had the incredible opportunity to send 12 young rowers from Lambeth, accompanied by their dedicated rowing coaches, on a journey to Ireland. The purpose of this trip was to participate in a week-long cultural youth exchange programme, fostering connections and promoting the exchange of ideas and experiences.

During their time in Ireland, Brixton Wings was warmly hosted by Carlow Regional Youth Services (CRYS), who also had 12 young participants from Carlow joining the exchange. Together, these 24 passionate youths embarked on various adventures, from kayaking in the beautiful waters of Carlow to rowing on the picturesque lakes of Killarney. But perhaps the most exciting activity of all was the exhilarating "mud slide" experience in west Cork, which created lasting memories for everyone involved.

A key aspect of this exchange programme was the emphasis on teamwork and collaboration. The young people from Lambeth and Carlow formed mixed teams or squads, offering them the opportunity to work together, learn from one another, and forge lifelong skills and friendships. This intermingling of cultures and perspectives served as the foundation for a truly enriching and transformative experience.

Building upon the success of the exchange in Ireland, Brixton Wings reciprocated the gesture by hosting the corresponding week-long cultural exchange programme at our very own Brixton Wings centre in Angell Town during the October mid-term break in 2019. Once again, the young participants from Lambeth took the lead, extending their warm hospitality to their Carlow counterparts.

During this second leg of the exchange, the mixed teams or squads assembled by both groups engaged in indoor rowing events and a thrilling regatta at the renowned London Regatta Centre in East London, with the support of London Youth Rowing. This provided an opportunity for the young rowers to showcase their skills and compete in a friendly atmosphere, further cementing the bonds of friendship that had formed during their time in Ireland.

To mark the conclusion of the exchange, a memorable evening of international food and music was organized, celebrating the cultural diversity and shared experiences of all participants. The highlight of the evening was an African drum workshop, where everyone joined together to create music using one of the world's most iconic instruments. This collaborative and harmonious experience truly encapsulated the spirit of the youth exchange programme, leaving a lasting impression on all those involved.

Overall, this EU ERASMUS funded youth exchange programme facilitated not only physical activities and cultural exploration but also the development of vital life skills and the formation of lifelong friendships. Brixton Wings feels incredibly privileged to have been a part of such an impactful initiative, providing young rowers from Lambeth the opportunity to connect with their counterparts in Carlow and to broaden their horizons through meaningful cultural exchanges and shared experiences.
