Duvar Brixton Wings member since 2018

Overcoming Boundaries and Winning Bronze at the 2023 London Youth Games

Brixton Wings takes immense pride in providing after-school and early intervention programs for children and young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds. Our organisation aims to offer affordable and accessible training and learning opportunities within the community.

This case study focuses on the exceptional accomplishments of one of our participants, Duvar Darko, who not only excelled in our music school but also went on to embrace various extracurricular activities, including rowing, horse riding, and kayaking. Duvar’s dedication, determination, and perseverance have led to a remarkable achievement—a bronze medal at the 2023 London Youth Games indoor rowing competition.

Duvar’s journey with Brixton Wings began with our after-school music classes. We offer weekly sessions where participants can learn keyboard/ piano, guitar, and engage in band workshops. Duvar’s commitment to mastering musical skills became the foundation for the subsequent stages of personal growth and achievement.

Recognizing Duvar’s determination to explore new horizons, we introduced various extracurricular activities
to broaden his experiences. Duvar enthusiastically embraced our rowing program in collaboration with London Youth Rowing (LYR) and Lambeth Sports. Weekly indoor rowing coaching sessions at the Ferndale Sports Centre provided Duvar with an opportunity to develop physical fitness, discipline, and

teamwork skills. Under the guidance of our dedicated coaches, Duvar honed their rowing techniques and gradually progressed from novice to a competitive level.

Duvar’s journey was not without challenges, but he consistently demonstrated resilience and
a willingness to push personal boundaries. The London Youth Games indoor rowing competition proved

to be a defining moment for Duvar. Displaying determination and focus, Duvar trained tirelessly, surpassing his own expectations and earning

a place on the podium, securing a well-deserved bronze medal. This accomplishment not only symbolizes their dedication and hard work but also showcases their ability to excel in a highly competitive environment.

Duvar’s success in rowing acted as a catalyst, motivating them to explore further extracurricular activities. In addition to rowing, Duvar participated in horse riding, broadening their

skill set and fostering personal growth. Furthermore, Duvar had
the privilege of representing the borough of Lambeth in kayaking at the London Youth Games—an impressive testament to their versatility and determination.

Duvar’s remarkable journey from the music school to winning a bronze medal at the London Youth Games indoor rowing competition exemplifies the impact of Brixton Wings’ programs and the immense potential within each participant. By providing a nurturing

environment, experienced teachers, and diverse opportunities, we empower children and young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds
to overcome barriers and achieve extraordinary accomplishments. Duvar’s story serves as an inspiration to others, encouraging them to push their boundaries, embrace new challenges, and strive for excellence in all aspects of life. Brixton Wings will continue to support and nurture future talents, helping them soar to even greater heights.
