Resilience, and Joy: The Power of Keyboard Donations

Hatty was very kind and lived life to the fullest.

Honouring Hatty: Transforming Lives Through Music

We are immensely grateful for Hatty’s Fund, a heartfelt initiative that continues to transform the lives of young people in our community. Hatty was a passionate lover of music, and in her memory, Hatty’s Fund was established to provide young musicians with access to high-quality instruments they might not otherwise afford. This fund not only honours her legacy but also serves as a beacon of hope and opportunity for the next generation of talented artists.

Over the past few months, six families at Brixton Wings have received keyboards through this initiative, including Sienna, Selihom, Ashley, Natalie, Kiki, and the twins Isaac and Elijah. Each family’s story is unique, yet they all reflect the profound impact that these donations have had on their lives. Here are just a few of those stories:

Sienna’s Journey

Sienna with her grandmother

At just seven years old, Sienna has faced challenges that would be overwhelming for most adults. She tragically lost her mother just three days after she was born and now lives with her grandmother. Despite these hardships, Sienna has thrived at the Brixton Wings youth centre, where her passion for music shines brightly. Her piano teacher recognised her dedication and hard work, and thanks to Hatty’s Fund, Sienna was gifted her very own keyboard.

The joy this brought to her household was immeasurable. “Seeing Sienna play with her keyboard at home has brought a light to our household,” her grandmother shared. “This gift has given her a way to express herself and build her confidence.”

Natalie’s Milestone

Natalie’s story is one of transformation and inspiration. She was the first recipient of an instrument through Hatty’s Fund, and the keyboard she received became a powerful tool for self-expression. Over her eight years at Brixton Wings, Natalie blossomed from a shy student into a confident assistant music teacher. She recently achieved a Distinction in her Grade 5 ABRSM Music exam, a testament to her hard work and dedication.

Along the way, Natalie overcame her shyness, gained confidence through public performances, and developed leadership skills by mentoring younger students. Her journey exemplifies the lasting impact that access to music can have on a young person’s life.

The Twins’ Story

Isaac and Sam ‘Twinning’

Our most recent donation went to twins Isaac and Sam, whose love for music has brought their family closer together. Music became a source of unity and comfort during challenging times. Their father shared a heartfelt message: “This keyboard has brought so much joy into our home. Watching my kids explore music together has been a gift beyond measure. Thank you, Brixton Wings, for giving them the opportunity to grow and create.”

The twins’ story is a beautiful reminder of music’s power to inspire hope, foster connections, and uplift entire families.

Looking Ahead: Expanding the Reach of Hatty’s Fund

Our keyboard donation program thrives thanks to Hatty's Fund and its generous donors. Together, we impact vulnerable families by providing instruments. We aim to expand by reaching more children in need of quality musical instruments and strengthening partnerships with schools and youth centres to ensure funds directly support this mission. With your help, we can inspire more young musicians to achieve their dreams.

A Special Thanks

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to Tom Scott, who knew Hatty from childhood and took the initiative to establish SGS, now known as Grounded Sounds. His efforts have been instrumental in making Hatty’s Fund a reality.

To all the donors and supporters who continue to honour Hatty’s legacy through this initiative: thank you for helping us create a brighter future for the young people of Brixton Wings. Together, we’re proving that music truly has the power to change lives.
