Brixton Wings Meets Coriolanus
Recently, eight young people from Brixton Wings were gifted an incredible opportunity to attend a performance of Coriolanus at the National Theatre. This engaging play examines how citizen influence impacts political actions in the Roman Republic, a theme that resonates with young audiences.
For our group, experiencing live performances with detailed sets and costumes was impressive, though the dialogue was more complex than they expected. However, this experience left a lasting impact, particularly because of the diverse, eloquent cast who brought the story to life. Seeing talented individuals on stage who represent their own communities opened a world of possibilities for our young people, highlighting paths they might one day pursue themselves.
After the show, the group was thrilled to meet Lambeth's own Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, who stars as Tullus Aufidius, and David Oyelowo, the lead in the production. Kobna shared valuable advice on perseverance and dedication, encouraging each young person to work consistently toward their goals. David’s warm welcome further inspired our young audience, showing them that success in the arts is both achievable and grounded in the community around them.
Thank you to The National Theatre for the tickets and John Vernon, who plays Lucius, for helping meet the cast. This opportunity gave our young participants a unique opportunity to be directly inspired by the performing arts.
For those involved in Brixton Wings’ music programs, this trip to the National Theatre sparked fresh inspiration, aligning beautifully with our mission to expose young people to the arts and foster personal growth. We appreciate this chance and look forward to more experiences that broaden our young people's horizons.
