Natalie’s Journey: From Student to Assistant Music Teacher at Brixton Wings

Natalie being embraced by her students.

Natalie has been part of Brixton Wings for 8 years, having taken part in all the programs we offer. Now an assistant music teacher, she began her journey in our piano classes and has grown into a confident and accomplished young woman. Natalie recently achieved a Distinction in her Grade 5 ABRSM Music exam, a milestone made possible by her dedication and the support of Brixton Wings. We had the chance to ask Natalie about her journey and how Brixton Wings has impacted her life.

BW: You’ve been part of Brixton Wings for 8 years. How has your journey with us shaped your personal and academic development?

Natalie: When I joined Brixton Wings, I was really shy and struggled with basic vocabulary. Even though I started with piano, I eventually attended Saturday classes where Medg taught me. My spelling, sentence formation, and vocabulary improved massively. I've learned how to speak publicly, which also helped me with my personal development.

BW: Can you share some of your favourite memories or standout moments from the programs you've participated in over the years?

Natalie: One of my favourite memories was during the Brixton Wings Summer Holiday Programme. We did so many activities, but Go-Karting was definitely a highlight for me. It was a thrill-seeking experience that created lots of memorable moments.

BW: You recently completed all of our programs. How has each one helped you grow, and which program had the biggest impact on you?

Natalie: One of the events that had the greatest impact on me was my first public performance. It was at Lambeth Town Hall, and I played piano in front of important people, including the head of the council. This experience boosted my confidence in performing to a major audience.

BW: Congratulations on achieving a Distinction in Grade 5 ABRSM Music! How did Brixton Wings support you in reaching this milestone in your musical journey?

Natalie: Brixton Wings started my journey in the ABRSM world, teaching me the foundations of Grade 5 and the techniques of Grade 3. The teachers provided me with incredible wisdom, and Medg gave me opportunities to raise money for my exam by teaching piano classes. My success in Grade 5 is truly due to the amazing support at Brixton Wings.

BW: How has your passion for music evolved during your time at Brixton Wings, and what role did the music programs play in your development?

Natalie: I started my music journey at 11 years old with a strong passion for it. As I took lessons, my love for music grew as I discovered new genres, ideas, and levels. The desire to learn more kept expanding my knowledge and passion for music.

BW: You're currently studying in sixth form, how have the skills and experiences you've gained at Brixton Wings helped you with your studies?

Natalie: Brixton Wings taught me how to communicate with others and not hide in a corner. This is a lesson I’ll carry with me everywhere, especially now in sixth form.

BW: As someone who has been with us for 8 years, how do you think Brixton Wings has impacted your personal growth and sense of community?

Natalie: Brixton Wings has been my "place of solace," offering me safety and support. It has shaped my personal development through sport, music, and life skills. The friendly and educative environment has helped me grow in so many ways.

BW: Can you tell us about your experience volunteering with Brixton Wings? How has this role shaped your leadership skills and connection to the community?

Natalie: I Started volunteering at Brixton Wings when I was 14. This experience taught me how to communicate with people of different ages and find effective ways to teach each person. It was a valuable challenge that deepened my understanding of music while I taught and learned. Volunteering significantly enhanced my leadership skills, including managing a class and helping students focus on their tasks.

BW: What advice would you give to other young people who are just starting their journey with Brixton Wings?

Natalie: Stay committed and dedicated. Brixton Wings is a place where you can develop skills, gain knowledge, and build character while having fun at the same time.

BW: Looking ahead, how do you think your experiences with Brixton Wings will influence your future goals and aspirations?

Natalie: The charitable work of Brixton Wings has inspired me to seek the best in everything and adapt to every situation. I hope to pass these skills on to others, helping them succeed in multiple ways.

Natalie's story shows how community and opportunities can change lives. Starting as a shy student, she became an assistant music teacher with help from Brixton Wings, proving that support can develop talent, boost confidence, and inspire others.
