2024 Summer Holiday Activities Programme

Reflecting on a Summer of Music, Food, Art, and Adventure at Brixton Wings

This summer at Brixton Wings has been nothing short of amazing! Our 2024 Holiday Activities Programme (HAP) was packed with over 10 exciting activities that engaged and empowered our young participants, aged 9 to 16. From coding and crochet to football, water sports, and music, every session was designed to help our youth learn new skills and have a great time.

Originally, we planned to accommodate 15 participants per day, but the program was so popular that we ended up with an incredible 24 eager young people each day. With full group participation and cooperation, the energy and enthusiasm they brought created an unforgettable experience over the 4-week program.

Highlights included Nathan from Electech Labs leading nine fantastic coding sessions, Fiona sharing her crochet expertise, and the Healthy Living Platform, who hosted an inspiring cooking workshop at We Are 336, where they also sponsor our weekly Thursday Food Hub. Brodie Williams from Anna Purna Café worked alongside them, helping the young participants discover healthy and delicious recipes. Lil guided the young people through creative Art classes, while Nathan, Lorie, and Flourish led action-packed football and basketball sessions.

For those keen on adventure, Tida and the London Youth Rowing team introduced paddleboarding, kayaking, and rowing at the Olympic Park, with two thrilling days at the Regatta Centre. A particularly memorable experience was with the team at Ebony Horse Club, where our young participants got the rare opportunity to ride horses through Brixton, seeing their community from a completely different perspective. Music remained at the heart of our activities, with Jacob leading inspiring band workshops where the group collaborated on compositions and performances.

We want to give a huge thanks to all our activity leaders and volunteers: Nathan for coding, Fiona for crochet, Brodie and the Healthy Living Platform for cooking, Lil for art, Nathan, Lorie, and Flourish for football and basketball, Tida and the team at LYR for water sports, Charlotte and the team at Ebony for horse riding, and Jacob for band workshops. A special shout-out goes to our amazing youth volunteers Loore, Tiife, Meso, Flourish, William, and Deba, who helped make the program such a success.

The general consensus from the participants? They had a 'Great' time! With such a range of activities, skills, and teamwork on display, we’re proud to have delivered a fun, learning-focused summer experience.
